The dream ends

In the end, the faces told the story.

The Floyd County High School girls’ basketball team hopes for a perfect season culminating in a state championship ended in Richmond Thursday night with a 52-48 loss to Gate City, the same team that knocked the out of the running last year.

It was a bittersweet ending for the previously undefeated team and the three busloads of county faithful who made the trip to Richmond but it doesn’t diminish what has been a great season for the girls’ team in what coach Alan Cantrell originally called a "rebuilding year."

The bad news may be that they lost the tournament but the good news is the entire team will be back next year. But the season that ended one game short of a state championship was still a remarkable one for a talented team that played their hearts out.

Their faces indeed told the story and you were there to capture it. They’re fortunate to have you on their team.

Congratulations to all of them! They even had a couple of us flatlanders up here near the Rappahannock River following their efforts.

I was going to say fortunes but that implies luck and they obviously worked too hard to get where they did to attribute their success to anything but work. We’ll all wait till next year with them.
