Saturday drive

Drove to Fredricksburg and back Saturday to pick up Amy's Christmas present (more about it after the big day). After the usual nail-biting tussle with traffic on I-81 and fog on Afton Mountain on I-64, turned off the Interstate East of Charlottesville for a beautiful drive through Albermarle County horse country.

Lots to see on the white-fenced estates that line both sides of the road between I-64 and Orange. Then a straight shot through The Wilderness and Chacecellor's battlefields and into Fredricksburg.

Had time to stop at Hard Times Cafe for a bowl of Texas chili and a side of jalapeños before getting back on the road. Less fog on Afton Mountain for the return but more on Christiansburg Mountain and all along Rte. 8 into Floyd.

  1. Stopped at the Hard Times on Jeff Davis Highway on the way out of town.  Sorry I didn’t think to let you know about the trip. Last minute thing.

A stop for chili at HT always makes a trip like this worth while. Although one of our other favorite eateries (Five Guys) has outlets in SW VA, Hard Times hasn’t come any further south in Virginia than Fred’s burg (although one has opened in Raleigh, NC).

Look us up if you get down this way. Merry Christmas.

  2. …been at the HT that’s just a couple of blocks below my apartment. Of the two, count ’em, two that we have that’s the only one right on Jeff Davis Hwy. We have a Five Guys here as well. Still no “Trader Joe’s” or “Whole Foods” but we have aspirations of moving up on the food chain one day. We only need a couple more subdivisions and I think we may show up on their radar.

Hope your weather there is grand although I’m sure it’s brisk and probably breezy. It’s 54 here under clear sunny skies and no wind. There’s something to be said for life in the flatlands even if the photo ops are not as plentiful.
Merry Christmas to you and Amy. Hope she likes her present. I have been wracking my brain trying to guess what we have here that would drag an erudite icon such as you down out of the highlands to do business in the Burg.

    Jim
