Floyd County High School’s old nemesis, the Radford Bobcats, won a hard fought game 78-60 Tuesday night, although the Buffaloes closed in at times in the later stages.
Caleb Tanner scored 29 points and now needs just 13 to break the Virginia High School League career scoring record. His efforts brought more media attention than normal to the game and WSLS Channel 10 interviewed players and fans about the approaching record.
Tanner scored 21 points in the first half and Floyd trailed 42-34 at the break. Many attempts, however, were blocked as the Bobcasts focused on him. He collected four fouls before game’s end and Preston Neukirch, a team leader on assists, fouled out late in the final quarter in a match where referees called 38 infractions against both teams amid boos and catcalls from fans of each team.
The Buffaloes led the game in three-point goals with 10 to the Bobcats four.
Floyd, is scheduled to finish the season at EastMont Thursday night in a game that will probably be moved to Saturday because of weather. Floyd will host the River Run Conference Tournament next week.
