Snowbirds, get wish

Floyd County Schools, reeling from the snow that covered parts of the area Saturday evening, struck with extreme cold temperatures that could affect starting of diesel school buses and facing a new storm that is expected to hit before noon today, closed their doors Monday.

Also on the postponement block is the conference basketball playoff opener at Floyd County High School Monday evening.  The Buffaloes were scheduled to face Giles.

The weather could put a serious crimp in the conference games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.  The approaching storm is expected to dump several inches Monday afternoon, Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Current forecasts predict eight-10-inches falling in Floyd County, followed by a string of bitter cold days with temperatures dropping below zero — a sure way to make sure the white stuff hangs around.

Appalachian Power Company is attempting restore power to 529 customers in the Blacksburg area of Montgomery County, down to a high of more than 5,000 outages in the area Sunday.

With banks and other places already closed for The President’s Day holiday, the impact of a winter storm could lessen but frigid temperatures are forecast to remain and get worse later in the week.

As February moves out and makes way for March later next week, winter has reared it ugly head.

Stay warm, if you can.
