Floyd breaks first-round regional tourney jinx

Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes varsity softball team broke its first round jinx in regional tournaments Tuesday with a 10-2 pasting of Chilhowie — advancing to round two.

Chilhowie jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Buffs responded by taking a 2-1 lead before their opponents tied it up. Floyd added another run to lead 3-2 going into the fifth inning when Floyd blew the game open with six runs — three coming from the Chilhowie pitcher who loaded the bases on walks and then walked in three runs.

Floyd — 19-3 for the season and district tournament champs — went into the regional tourney Tuesday with a string of first-round losses in previous years but the jinx is broken (more photos in next week’s Floyd Press).
